“Tarsia is a town in the lower Crati valley, located at the point where the river opens its way to the Piana di Sibari and reaches the offshoots of the Sila. The town stands on a spur to the left of the valley floor.
The name of the village derives from a Greek name of person Tharsias. Of uncertain origins, until 1606 it belonged to the State of Bisignano, then it was part of the fief of the Spinelli, who had the title of prince there.
Today there is a museum of memory in the place where the largest fascist concentration camp in Italy was housed, the Ferramonti internment camp, where mainly foreign Jews and ethnic minorities considered enemies by the fascist regime were imprisoned. The camp was liberated by the British on September 14, 1943.
The economy is based on the breeding of cattle and sheep and on agricultural products, in particular fruit, cereals and olives.
