Municipality of Cannara

We publish the speech by Fabrizio Gareggia, Mayor of Cannara, in Umbria, where the free hotspots have been activated and in addition to the Municipalities that have joined the WiFi Italia Project.

“Cannara rises on the left bank of the Topino river and is located almost in the center of the Umbrian Valley, it is part of the mountain community of the Martani, Serano and Subasio Mountains. The first settlements in this area, once very marshy (Cannara derives its name from “canna”, an aquatic plant still persistent today) date back to around the year 1000. Originally and for many centuries it was a well-fortified castle with high walls and towers, which became common during the thirteenth century. For a long time it was threatened by the expansionism of nearby Assisi, until the Cannaresi decided to submit to Perugia (1291), obtaining protection in exchange. In 1424 it became a fief of the powerful Baglioni family from Perugia, who kept it under their dominion. Since then, and until the unification of Italy (1861), it belonged to the Papal States.

Among the important monuments the Church of San Biagio, the Parish Church of San Matteo, the Church of San Giovanni Battista and the Church of San Francesco: built between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, it was dedicated to the Saint of Assisi who, according to tradition, Cannara would have conceived the Franciscan Third Order and made the famous Sermon to the birds in Piandarca.

To enhance the territory and its history, the Municipality has decided to join the public wifi network created by Infratel - on a mandate from the Ministry of Economic Development - with the Piazza WiFi Italia project. "
