We publish the speech by Fabrizio Tondi, mayor of Abbadia san Salvatore, in Tuscany, where free hotspots have been activated and joins the Municipalities that have already joined the WiFi Italy Project.
“Abbadia San Salvatore rises 832 meters above sea level and is the oldest and most populous village on Monte Amiata.
The name of the town derives from the ancient Benedictine abbey, founded in the first half of the eighth century. The monastery of S.S.mo Salvatore on Monte Amiata was commissioned by the Lombard king Ratchis to whom, according to legend, the Savior appeared above the top of a silver fir. This apparition is represented in the coat of arms of the Municipality, where however the fir tree is replaced by the chestnut tree, to symbolize what has been for centuries the first source of livelihood of the local communities.
In the fifteenth century Pope Pius II described it thus in his Commentarii: “Nature formed a valley of about eight stadiums, limited by rugged cliffs. The ancients built a village there that was well defended by a ditch full of running water”.
By joining the Wifi Italia project, which created a public and free network, our administration wanted to participate in the challenge of digitization that our country is engaged in".
